General Christopher LaNeve is set to become acting Chief of Staff of the US Army. His appointment follows the departure of Randy George, who had been in the position since 2023. Generally, the Chief of Staff role is the highest in the Army, typically held for a four-year term.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell praised LaNeve, noting that he is 'a battle-tested leader with decades of operational experience' and is trusted by Secretary Hegseth to execute the administration's vision effectively.
LaNeve's promotion comes as the U.S. confronts ongoing challenges in Iran and amid a significant reform of military leadership initiated by Secretary Hegseth, who has made several high-profile dismissals over the past year.
This appointment marks LaNeve's third career transition under Hegseth, having previously served as Vice Chief of Staff since February 2026 and holding several other senior roles since joining the military from the University of Arizona in 1990. Over his impressive 36-year career, he has led important military operations in various global hotspots, including Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as commanding the Eighth Army in South Korea and the 82nd Airborne Division.
