The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a groundbreaking partnership to develop a massive AI data center at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant site in Piketon, Ohio. This facility is expected to harness up to 10 gigawatts of power, forming a large-scale platform for AI technology.
Accompanied by SoftBank and AEP Ohio, the project is not only a turnaround for a defunct uranium plant but also pivotal for creating substantial job opportunities. Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasized that this initiative is a step towards ensuring the U.S. leads in the AI race, aligning with broader efforts to reindustrialize America.
With construction slated to begin this year, the project is poised to spark thousands of jobs while underscoring advancements in energy research, quantum computing, and national security applications.
However, the project hasn't escaped local scrutiny, as some Ohio residents voice concerns regarding the environmental impact of mega data centers. As Ohio ranks fifth nationwide in data centers, ongoing debates about the costs and benefits of AI infrastructure in the region will likely intensify.
