Pétanque Player Dies After Metal Ball Blow

In Mimizan, a French Atlantic resort, a 68‑year‑old pétanque enthusiast lost his life after he was struck in the head by a metal boule during a dispute between two beach‑based teams.

The incident began when the beach‑team members requested a playing spot in town to escape a record heatwave, igniting a territorial spat with the town‑based squad. According to witnesses, a heated argument escalated into a physical confrontation, culminating in the suspect—an 81‑year‑old man from Mont‑de‑Marsan—throwing a boule that struck the victim on the head.

Authorities captured the suspect on the scene and have taken him into custody. Prosecutor Alexa Dubourg said the fight “degenerates into a physical confrontation” and that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact roles of those present.

The victim did not die instantly from the blow; instead, he collapsed minutes after the impact, suffering a sudden heart attack that proved fatal. Radio station Ici Gascogne confirmed the sequence of events and reported that the heart attack followed the shock of the injury.

Pétanque, a popular French pastime, involves rolling heavy steel boules toward a small wooden target. The game is typically played on green courts, but local rivalry between beach and town teams can ignite passion—and, unfortunately, violence—as seen in this tragic event.

A local resident told AFP that although the rivalry between beach and town players is intense, it never seemed to reach the violent level that characterized this exchange. The incident has left the community stunned and has prompted a call for improved safety measures at communal playing venues.
