Petanque Play Turns Fatal on French Beach
A 68‑year‑old pétanque player died after being struck by a metal boule during a heated dispute between rival teams in the French Atlantic resort of Mimizan.
The quarrel started when a beach‑side group requested to play in town to escape the summer heat, sparking argument with the local town players. An 81‑year‑old man was arrested and is held in custody.
Petanque is a French game that involves rolling hollow steel balls as close as possible to a small wooden target ball. Police are still determining each attendee’s role in the incident.
Local media reported that the victim did not die instantly but collapsed minutes later, suffering a heart attack. The case has attracted national attention as authorities continue the inquiry.
