Australian police defended their actions after violently clashing with protesters during a demonstration against a visit by the Israeli president. Video emerged of police charging and punching protesters during the rally in Sydney, leading to 27 arrests and nine charges against protesters, with several injuries reported, including a state parliament MP.
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon stated that officers showed 'remarkable restraint' while others voiced their concerns about the police's aggressive tactics. Protesters, primarily advocating for Palestinian rights, were denied the right to march during Herzog's visit due to new restrictions imposed after an antisemitic attack last year.
The NSW government invited Herzog to Australia following the Bondi Beach incident, aiming to support the Jewish community. However, many believe this visit dismisses the concerns of pro-Palestinian groups. Footage showed chaotic scenes as police attempted to disperse several thousand demonstrators.
Amidst the escalating situation, Premier Chris Minns defended the police's position but faced criticism for the perceived handling of the protests. Activists plan to hold further demonstrations, calling for accountability for police actions and supporting the right to protest.
