Russia has executed a massive overnight strike on Ukraine, deploying its advanced Oreshnik ballistic missile for only the second time. This attack has tragically resulted in four fatalities and over 25 injuries in Kyiv, with terrifying explosions lighting up the night sky.

The first deployment of the Oreshnik occurred in November 2024 against Dnipro. The Russian defense ministry claims this latest assault was a direct response to a Ukrainian drone attack targeting President Putin’s residence in December, an action Kyiv denies.

Reports indicate that videos capturing multiple explosions surfaced on social media approximately at midnight. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed missile strikes on crucial infrastructure in Lviv, a city located near the Polish border, worsening the energy crisis amid the ongoing winter.

With a range of approximately 5,500 kilometers, the Oreshnik is designed to launch multiple warheads that fragment during descent, causing significant destruction.

Ukrainian foreign minister Andrii Sybiha labeled the assault a serious threat to security in Europe, signaling a pattern of repeated aggressions from Russia. Furthermore, Ukrainian officials have claimed that their military has also been targeting Russian energy facilities in response to ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.

The night of chaos highlighted the dire impacts on civilian life, as critical infrastructure, particularly heating systems, have been considerably affected, leaving many without necessary warmth during severe winter conditions.
