The UK and France have signed a declaration of intent on deploying troops in Ukraine if a peace deal is made with Russia, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said.
After talks with Ukraine's allies in Paris, he stated that the UK and France would establish military hubs across Ukraine and build protected facilities for weapons and military equipment to deter future invasion.
Additionally, the proposal indicates that the US would take the lead in monitoring a ceasefire, with both countries looking to secure Ukraine’s borders and assist in rebuilding their armed forces.
Russia has warned that any foreign troops in Ukraine would be a legitimate target, though no official comment has been made regarding this announcement.
Since the Russian invasion began in February 2022, Moscow has controlled about 20% of Ukrainian territory.
During a joint press conference, Starmer highlighted the importance of the declaration, underscoring it as a vital part of the commitment to support Ukraine in the long-term.
French President Emmanuel Macron noted the progress made during the talks, affirming that security guarantees for Ukraine had been agreed as part of a potential ceasefire plan.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has remarked that substantial movement has been achieved, though genuine progress will only be validated when a complete end to the conflict is secured.
