Skyroot Aerospace will launch its first orbital rocket – carrying a diamond lotus and scientific payloads, making satellite launches feel like booking a cab.

India’s private space start‑up Skyroot Aerospace has become the country’s first space‑tech unicorn, aiming to turn satellite launches into a booking‑as‑easy‑as‑a-cab service. Its new rocket, Vikram‑1, will travel to low Earth orbit at 280 km, carrying scientific instruments, a diamond lotus and tiny gold sculptures of famous scientists. If successful, Skyroot will be the third country, after the U.S. and China, to launch a private orbital rocket. This move could shatter the long wait that satellite operators now face, opening a huge market for global space services.

Skyroot’s Big Launch

Skyroot Aerospace, India’s first space‑tech unicorn, is about to launch its new rocket, Vikram‑1, into low Earth orbit. The 7‑story rocket will soar to 280 km (175 miles) in just 16 minutes and carry a mix of science tools, a diamond lotus and tiny gold sculptures of Nobel laureates.

If it works, Skyroot will join the U.S. and China as the only private companies able to launch orbit‑class rockets. The company’s goal is to make satellite launches as simple as booking a taxi, giving space‑small businesses a faster, cheaper path to orbit.

The launch, set for 11:30 AM India time (06:00 GMT), is part of Skyroot’s “cab to orbit” plan. It could help satellites that power everything from weather forecasts to disaster alerts reach their destinations quicker and stop long waiting periods for launch slots.
