In a dramatic display of passion, around 1,000 animal rights activists gathered in Wisconsin, trying to gain access to Ridglan Farms, a beagle breeding facility that has drawn controversy for alleged mistreatment of its animals. The protest resulted in 25 arrests as police confronted some activists with pepper spray and rubber bullets during the initial attempts on Saturday.
Wayne Hsiung, leader of the Coalition to Save the Ridglan Dogs, was among those arrested, potentially facing felony charges. Despite earlier clashes, the mood of Sunday’s gathering shifted to cooperation, with about 200 people expressing their concerns without significant incident.
The facility, which currently holds approximately 2,000 beagles, has faced scrutiny before. In March, protesters successfully rescued 30 dogs during a previous break-in, leading to a previous wave of arrests. Despite denials of misconduct, Ridglan Farms has agreed to relinquish its state breeding license as part of a plea deal to avoid prosecution for animal mistreatment.
Proponents of the protests argue that animals are sentient beings deserving of protection from abuse, echoing sentiments shared by Hsiung from jail after his arrest, challenging the authorities’ response to their rescue efforts.
