Amid severe heat reaching record temperatures, wildfires continue to engulf regions in Greece and Turkey.

Firefighters in Greece are working tirelessly on five major fronts in the Peloponnese, Evia, Kythira, and Crete to combat blazes that have threatened homes and natural landscapes. Central Greece has hit scorching temperatures of 42.4C (108.32F), exacerbating the crisis. In Turkey, the heat soared even higher, with a blistering 50.5C recorded in Silopi, marking the highest temperature ever for the country.

In Greece, winds are worsening conditions, prompting the nation to call for EU assistance, including firefighting aircraft. In Kythira, 20% of the land is reported affected, forcing evacuations across multiple villages. As efforts ramp up, firefighters continue to face hazardous situations, with recent flare-ups resulting in injuries among the rescue teams.

Neighboring Turkey isn’t spared either—wildfires have claimed lives, and local officials have restricted water usage in affected areas. The battle against wildfires is intensifying as authorities brace for prolonged firefighting efforts, signaling a tough time ahead amid the ongoing climate crisis.
