An 11-year-old boy from Gaza, Adam al-Najjar, is on his way to Italy for crucial medical care after surviving a heartbreaking airstrike that took the lives of his father and nine siblings. The family was struck on May 23 in Khan Younis, and Adam has endured severe injuries, particularly to his left arm, which remains critically damaged.
On Wednesday, Adam, accompanied by his mother, Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, boarded a Red Crescent ambulance to begin their journey to Milan. Italy's foreign ministry confirmed that he will be flying on a chartered flight arranged by the Italian Air Force for medical assistance. Along with Adam, 17 other injured individuals and their relatives are making the trip as part of a humanitarian initiative.
Before leaving, Dr. Alaa shared that her son has stabilized but has sustained significant injuries, requiring specialist treatment. The mother and son duo will first go through Eilat, Israel, before reaching Italy.
The tragedy struck after Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar, Adam's father, had just dropped Alaa off at work when their house was bombed. Although initially hospitalized, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Reports indicate that over 150 Palestinian patients have been evacuated to Italy since the conflict escalated, emphasizing the dire need for medical care amidst ongoing violence in the region.
As the family millions mourn their losses, Adam’s journey symbolizes hope and resilience amid adversity.
