A former member of an elite police unit has been charged with the murder of a whistleblower who testified at a major police corruption inquiry in South Africa. Matipandile Sotheni, 41, appeared in court accused of killing Marius van der Merwe in December last year. Sotheni is accused of shooting dead Van der Merwe in full view of his family, a case that has caused national outrage. During his appearance at the inquiry, Van der Merwe, identified only as Witness D, implicated police officials in the torture and murder of a suspected robber. This testimony exposed widespread police corruption and led to the suspension of several officers. The inquiry, known as the Madlanga commission, was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa. Sotheni, now facing charges related to the murder, has shown no emotion in court, contrasting sharply with the grieving family of Van der Merwe, who believe that someone close to him ordered the hit. The case highlights ongoing issues of police integrity in South Africa as authorities work to unravel a complex web of crime and corruption.
