A groundbreaking study known as "ALIVE" published in The Lancet shows that the pill, intended for widespread use, could revolutionize treatment for soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) such as hookworm and whipworm that plague children in developing countries. The infection, which spreads through contaminated food and water, can lead to severe gastrointestinal issues, malnutrition, and anaemia.

The pill can be administered easily as either a single dose or in three consecutive pills, making mass treatment programs feasible. Project leader Prof. Jose Muñoz explained, "It is easy to administer," and the use of two drugs minimizes the risk of parasites developing resistance.

Results from a clinical trial with 1,001 children aged 5-18 in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Mozambique revealed improved efficiency when pairing albendazole with ivermectin. However, some uncertainties remain, particularly about the drug's effectiveness in adults and different populations.

With the trial results submitted to European and African regulators and larger trials set to begin in Kenya and Ghana, the anticipation around this innovative treatment continues to grow. Dr. Stella Kepha from the Kenya Medical Research Institute stated that while the pill has "great potential for improving the health of affected communities," further work is necessary for broader distribution.
