Gunfire erupts at Niamey airport
The capital city of Niger, Niamey, was rocked in the early hours of Thursday as gunfire echoed through the entrance of its main airport. Residents told reporters the shots began at roughly 06:00 local time and lasted for about an hour, with explosions heard in the vicinity.
The incident follows a history of attacks in the region: since 2016 Niger has been battling a militant Islamist insurgency. In January, an Islamic State affiliate claimed responsibility for an assault on the same airport, prompting a security crackdown. However, no group has attributed the current Thursday shooting.
The country’s military junta, which seized power over a decade ago, has struggled to regain control amidst these persistent attacks. The authorities have yet to release an official statement, and security forces are on high alert.
The fires and explosions at Niamey airport highlight the ongoing tensions in the Sahel region, where neighboring Burkina Faso and Mali also face conflict. While the international community watches, local residents remain wary, hoping for swift stabilization.
Stay tuned for updates on the situation.
