Two Israeli soldiers have been handed 30 days of military detention after one soldier was caught on video vandalizing a statue of Jesus with a sledgehammer in the village of Debel, southern Lebanon. Alongside the soldier who took the photo of the act, they will face military disciplinary actions and removal from combat duties according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which has stated that their behavior was contrary to army directives. Six other soldiers present at the scene will also face consequences for not intervening. The incident caused significant outrage on social media, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressing sadness over the actions of the soldiers. The local society, including Father Fadi Flaifel, a community leader, denounced the incident as a violation of human rights and a lack of civility. Despite ongoing military tensions in the region, the IDF highlighted that their focus is on combatting Hezbollah, not harming Lebanese civilians.
