Thailand has erupted in accusations against Cambodia, claiming it has "deliberately" breached a rarely agreed-upon ceasefire that was meant to halt fierce border clashes, resulting in 33 fatalities and the displacement of countless families. This fragile peace process, which started on Monday following five consecutive days of explosive fighting, has become increasingly shaky.

The Thai military asserted that it ceased firing after midnight, only to continue experiencing gunfire from Cambodia. However, Cambodia's defense ministry refuted this claim, stating there were no clashes since the ceasefire commenced. Meetings designed to facilitate the ceasefire discussion have faced cancellations, escalating concerns about long-lasting peace.

Tensions had already been on a rise since May after a Cambodian soldier was killed, culminating in significant injuries to Thai soldiers due to a landmine explosion. In a move emblematic of deteriorating relations, Thailand shuttered borders, recalled ambassadors, and expelled Cambodia's envoy. The conflict intensified as Cambodian forces launched rockets into Thai territory, causing civilian casualties.

While firing continued up until the ceasefire's official start, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet remarked that "frontlines have eased." Both nations had proposed withdrawing troops and agreeing on independent monitoring to prevent future skirmishes. These discussions were prompted by pressure from global authorities, including a warning from U.S. President Donald Trump to halt negotiations if fighting persisted.

The historical roots of this conflict trace back to colonial delineations that were further complicated by differing claims over cultural heritage sites. Instances of violence along the border have increased since 2008, particularly following Cambodia's efforts to secure a historic temple as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an endeavor that sparked outrage in Thailand.

With aggravated tensions and new restrictions, the future of peace hangs in the balance as both nations tread carefully in pursuit of a resolution.
