At least 29 people have been arrested in Minneapolis during protests over the death of a woman who was shot by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.
One police officer was also injured after a chunk of ice was thrown at them, city officials said, during demonstrations which saw 1,000 people take to the streets of the city on Friday night.
Protests against immigration enforcement have been held across the US after 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was shot in her car on Wednesday.
The Trump administration stated the agent who fired the shots acted in self-defense, but local officials insisted Good posed no danger.
Minneapolis Police declared an unlawful assembly on Friday night as protesters gathered outside the Canopy Hotel in the city, believed to be housing some ICE agents. Some individuals reportedly forced entry into the hotel through an alley entrance.
Videos posted online depicted protesters flashing bright lights, blowing whistles, and banging on drums. Officers reported well over 1,000 demonstrators, some of whom threw ice, snow, and rocks at police and vehicles, but fortunately, no serious injuries were recorded.
Mayor Jacob Frey praised the peaceful majority of the protesters but condemned those who caused damage. The arrested individuals were later released, and by 01:00 local time (07:00 GMT), the crowd had been dispersed.
Frustration is mounting among many in Minneapolis regarding ICE’s presence in the state, with locals directly contacting the police department with grievances. Furthermore, Congresswomen Ilhan Omar, Kelly Morrison, and Angie Craig faced obstructions while trying to tour an ICE facility in Minneapolis.
With further protests anticipated this weekend in Minneapolis and other states, the community's response to immigration enforcement remains a heated topic.
