Surreal showdown: British couple on yacht fired warning shots by Russian warship
A retired couple from the UK were sailing 23 miles off the Isle of Wight when a Russian frigate, the Admiral Grigorovich, fired a series of warning shots and small‑arms fire toward their yacht. The couple, Jane and Alan Kelvey, said the shots were not aimed at them and were intended as a warning; they immediately turned their vessel 90° to avoid any collision.
The incident was flagged as “reckless” by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, while the Ministry of Defence claims the shots were a precautionary measure to avoid a potential compromise in navigation. The Mahler‑Grigorovich had reportedly been shadowing a Russian fleet and was being monitored by HMS Mersey, a UK patrol boat, during the incident.
The event follows a Royal Navy seizure of a Russian‑flagged oil tanker in the English Channel, a move that heightens diplomatic tensions. Despite the intervention, the MoD stated the firing was unrelated to the earlier tanker raid. National security officials are investigating the incident while the channel remains a contested space for international vessels.
