US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order threatening additional tariffs on countries that trade with Iran.
The order, issued on Friday, does not specify the rate but mentions a 25% tariff as an example. It applies to goods imported into the US from nations that purchase goods or services from Iran.
While Trump has not commented directly on the order, he reiterated the insistence that Iran should not develop nuclear weapons while speaking on Air Force One.
This action came after talks between US and Iranian officials in Oman, following weeks of escalating threats from both sides.
Earlier this year, Trump announced his intention to impose tariffs during a post on Truth Social, stating, Effective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a tariff of 25% on all business with the United States. However, details on enforcement have yet to be clarified.
The White House clarified that this order reflects an ongoing national emergency concerning Iran's nuclear capabilities and support for terrorism and ballistic missile development, which jeopardize American security.
Despite crippling sanctions, Iran continues to export, with China being its largest partner, importing over $14 billion in goods. These developments could affect various countries that maintain trade relations with Iran.
