Just Stop Oil, a prominent British climate activist collective known for its dramatic demonstrations, announced that it would cease its high-profile protests after achieving its main goal of stopping new oil and gas licensing in the UK. Following a final protest scheduled for next month in London, the group hinted at a new direction, preparing for a strategic regrouping.
Spokesman James Skeet expressed satisfaction with their accomplishments, stating, “We achieved what we set out to achieve.” The activists rose to fame in 2022 with various eye-catching actions, including throwing tomato soup at Vincent van Gogh's “Sunflowers” and gluing themselves to iconic art pieces to emphasize the urgency of climate issues.
While the group insists that their methods were intended to highlight crucial social changes needed to combat climate change without damaging the artworks—thanks to protective glass—some critics asserted that the historical frames had suffered damage. Moving forward, Just Stop Oil is shifting its focus and promises to continue advocating for environmental justice in new and innovative ways.
