A woman and a child jumped from a rooftop to escape a mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, where authorities say a father fatally shot eight children, including seven of his own. Officials reported receiving an emergency call at 05:55 CDT, with the caller indicating they were 'on top of the house' as the suspect remained inside. Police withheld the identities of the survivors but confirmed they were in stable condition. The gunman died following a shootout with officers, though it’s unclear if he took his own life or was killed by police. Two adult women, including the children's mother, were also wounded and are recovering in the hospital, alongside a ninth child who was hurt while escaping the shooting. The eight victims, comprising siblings and a cousin, ranged in age from 3 to 11.
Recalling tragic events, Police Chief Wayne Smith stated that within minutes of the emergency call, the caller indicated they had fled from the roof to safety in the backyard. Minutes later, the gunman attacked another home, leading to a series of emergency calls and a chaotic situation with police in pursuit. The shooter was later found dead with no children present.
Authorities are still working to determine a motive for the shooting, which is believed to have stemmed from a domestic dispute, as the suspect was reportedly going through a divorce. The community is now called upon to address issues surrounding domestic violence and gun access, especially after the opening of a new domestic violence center just days prior to this tragic incident.
